July 4th Fun: 10 Things We Want to Do This (Long) Weekend

We doubt you need guidance, but here are a few of our suggested activities for this long holiday weekend. Happy 4th of July, be safe, and have fun.

Get Patriotic
We’re all about the stars and stripes this holiday weekend, and in addition to celebrating the 4th of July, we’re still partying over our new commenting system. No registration, no personal details, no censors: That’s freedom, baby.

Get Better Skin
Who doesn’t want to glow, especially in the summertime? We’re hitting up the supplement aisles for some natural skin-helpers this weekend.

Eat Desserts a la Red, White, and Blue
Even if you skip the burger, chips, and soda this Sunday, who can say no to these berry-filled, 4th of July desserts?

Make Our Summer Reading List
When the fireworks are over, we’ll be taking our extra day off to work through our summer reading list. We’re also taking suggestions for our next reads, and we want you to weigh in. (We’ll enter you for a chance to win a $25 Amazon.com gift certificate if you tell us the books you like.)

Turn Off The Television
We’re looking forward to Mad Men and The Next Food Network Star just as much as the next gal, but we’re tired of seeing TV and movie characters eat whatever they want, without paying for it in pounds gained. We’ll stick to real-life images of beauty and health this weekend.

Party, Eco-Style
In the U.S. of A. we can do whatever we want, but that doesn’t mean we want to mess with the environment. We’re sticking to eco-friendly 4th of July party supplies this weekend.

Daydream
Yep, we’ve got three full days to keep our head in the clouds this weekend, and it’ll probably help us get more creative and solve problems.

Clean and Green Our Kitchens
And we don’t just mean wiping up the BBQ sauce after Sunday. We mean getting our cookers in tip-top, eco-friendly shape.

Dance
Warning: We’re going to get down this weekend, and if it’s not at an outdoor concert, then it can still be green with these awesome eco-friendly speakers.

Have Fun
Whether we do it Elle Macpherson-style on a bike, by working out under the sun, or just by enjoying our leisure time, we plan on having lots of summery fun this holiday weekend, and we hope you do, too.

Does Trimming Your Hair Really Make It Grow Faster?

Many a hairdresser will tell you that maintaining your ends with a trim will actually help your hair grow faster, but deep down, we suspect that our regular cuts are just making their wallets grow faster. The New York Times asked Dr. Richard D. Granstein, chairman of the department of dermatology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center if trimmed hair knows to regrow to its maximum length. His response? He says, “hair is dead, and cutting it does not send a signal to the hair follicle,” and “cutting or trimming hair has no effect on its cycle or ultimate length”.

The length of hair depends on the anagen (or growing) phase of the hair cycle in individual hair follicles, and the length of the phase can vary from a few weeks to a few years. That’s why hair on our heads can grow long, while hair on our bodies and faces grows shorter. It’s also why some men can’t grow a moustache, and some of us just don’t seem to be able to grow long locks.

Marriage Economics: Would You Sell Tickets to Your Wedding?

Weddings can be loads of fun, but they can also cost loads of money, forcing some couples to shorten their guest list and remove their +1 invitation extensions. Slate’s Daniel Engber argues that telling guests not to bring an escort is bad practice, ruining the fun for guests and defeating the purpose of a good wedding. So what does he suggest to keep the price of the party affordable for bride and groom? Selling tickets to your wedding.

It sounds a little weird, but the concept of telling guests that they can bring a +1 if they’ll help cover the costs actually makes some sense. Engber offers that, instead of buying wedding gifts, pitching in to cover the costs of making the wedding open to dates and friends is a reasonable exchange, and if put kindly, shouldn’t be offensive to guests.

So would you sell tickets to your wedding? Have you ever been asked to help pay for a guest?
