Twilight Sex: 7 Myths About Sex and Women Over 50

Whether you dread them or look forward to them, your twilight years will come, but one thing we’re usually taught to believe about growing old is that sex comes to a halt. According to Dr. Dorree Lynn, author of Sex for Grownups, sex after 50 doesn’t have to be null and void. Here are seven myths about sex in your twilight years that she busted for More Magazine:

1. Older Women Are Bad In Bed: Years of experience will hardly make you a lousy lover. In many cultures and times past, older women helped initiate young men into the world of sex.

2. Women Over 50 Don’t Want Sex As Much As Men Over 50: Women just need better foreplay, sex talk, and communication about sex.

3. Women’s Sex Drive Diminishes Faster Than Men’s: Though women’s desires can be more complex (yes, we like to cuddle), they don’t go away. On the contrary, older women report that they know what they want, so sex can actually become more enjoyable.

4. Older Women Don’t Want Oral: Women over 50, like women under 50, have varying preferences, and oral sex is one of them. Getting more comfortable with yourself is one of the perks of age, however, so if you’re into oral sex, you’re more likely to enjoy it by the time you hit 50.

5. Older Women Don’t Have Fantasies: Most women have fantasies, and they’re a healthy part of maintaining sex drive. If your mind tends to wander towards menu planning and tomorrow’s work meetings, try focusing on something or someone new (and sexier).

6. Women Over 50 Need Romance To Have Sex: We don’t know many women who don’t like to be wined and dined, and though most women do like to have some kind of emotional connection, it’s not any more required after 50 than before.

7. Women Lose Feeling In Their Vaginas As They Age: Hormonal changes do occur with age, which can cause vaginal dryness and effect sensitivity down there. But it varies woman to woman, and using vibrators and having regular sex can help maintain a healthy drive.

Vacation in Nature — Literally: Treehotel

If you happen to be traveling to Sweden this summer, and enjoy — I don’t know — having your mind blown, then you’ll need to check out Treehotel. Opening on Saturday, Treehotel consists of four rooms, each in a separate, unique building suspended in the canopy of the Boreal forest.

Though only one of the rooms is mirrored (much to our and Double Rainbow Guy’s dismay), all of the rooms will offer breathtaking views of the forest surrounding them. The hotel also offers year-round activities, but none that hurt the environment. We are definitely putting Treehotel on our fantasy to-do list. Check out the other three rooms on Inhabitat.

Gender Equality: Shapewear For Men

Women have suffered decades of painful shapewear: everything from corsets, shaper bras, control-top panty hose, and Spanx have bound, tightened, smoothed, and restricted our blood flow while doing it. Not that we aren’t glad for a smooth panty line now and then, but seeing our male cohorts in cotton boxers and loose, forgiving pants (God forbid their balls get uncomfortable) leaves us a little bitter.

Good news: Companies are starting to level the playing field with shapewear for men. Spanx® for Men has started selling compression undershirts , and the men’s clothing company Under Gear has started selling a treasure trove of “shape-enhancing” underwear, including the Tummy Belt to the right.

The thought of our boyfriends in Spanx is entirely unappealing, but we’re happy to see that we’re not the only ones being duped into buying uncomfortable, expensive devices to keep our every bump, curve, and line in check.

Trash-Free for a Year: Are You Eco-Friendly Enough?

Think about everything you’ve thrown out today so far. A lot of crap, right? The average person tosses four pounds of trash a day. But get this: An eco-friendly couple in Oregon created just four pounds of trash over 365 days. They decided to go debris-free for an entire year, and through recycling, buying locally grown food, and composting, they accumulated around 75 pieces of small trash during that time. Crazy. Could you do it?

Kristen McMenamy In Vogue: Finally, A Grey-Tressed Model We Can Look Up To

Aside from the occasional Land’s End catalog spread, grey-haired models are rarely put anywhere near a styled fashion shoot, so our jaws dropped when we saw 43-year-old model Kristen McMenamy proudly flaunting her silver grey locks in the August issue of Vogue.

We can only hope to age as gracefully, but it’s still refreshing to see a post-teen face in a fashion editorial (we get sick of seeing teenagers wearing clothing that will actually end up on the backs of professional, high-earning women – above the age of 15).
