FDA Approves Tribenzor For High Blood Pressure Control – NewThree-In-One Combination

The drug is not recommended for patients with impaired renal functions and contains a diuretic for water volume.  BD

PARSIPPANY, N.J., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Daiichi Sankyo, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Tribenzor (olmesartan medoxomil, amlodipine, hydrochlorothiazide), a new three-in-one combination product taken once-image daily for the treatment of hypertension in patients who are not adequately controlled on any two of the following antihypertensive drug classes: angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers and diuretics. Tribenzor is not indicated for initial therapy.(2)

Tribenzor combines three widely prescribed antihypertensive medications, each working in a different way, to lower blood pressure.(2) It combines the complementary actions of olmesartan medoxomil (which blocks angiotensin II receptors), amlodipine (which inhibits the entrance of calcium into the blood vessel walls), and hydrochlorothiazide (a diuretic which reduces water volume in the blood).(2) Together these three medications allow blood vessels to relax so that blood can flow more easily.(2)

Maternity Line at Forever 21: Tacky or Tasteful?

Forever 21, the clothing shop known for its stylish, cheap, and arguably disposable clothing aimed at the 21-and-under set is introducing a new maternity line, “Love 21″. They’ll be launching it in five states – Texas, Utah, Alaska, Arizona and California. Hmmn. Though Forever 21 reps claim that the store locations are random, these states just happen to be the states with the highest teen pregnancy rates.

We suppose it’s their right to sell clothing for moms-to-be, but we’re not so sure we believe that their locations are pure coincidence. What do you think – is it tacky or tasteful to market trendy clothing to teen moms?

Want to Cut Down on School Crime? Just Change the Lunch Menu

photo: Thinkstock

You know that cranky feeling you get after you eat a Snickers? Your head hurts, you feel gross, and you may even get a little snappy. Well, the sugar crash that makes us adults a little crabby in the afternoon turns out to have even greater effects on kids, and a high school principal in Appleton, Wisconsin, changed up her students’ nutrition to cut down on crime in her school.

LuAnn Coenen took out all of the junk food and soda from her school, replacing it with fresh fruits, vegetables, and water. As the junk food vanished, so did vandalism, litter, and student crime. The high-schoolers were much calmer and more focused on school work.

So we wonder: Why aren’t more parents and school districts learning about this and taking action? It’s such a simple change, and they would cut down on money to pay security guards, tutors, and detention monitors — not to mention the people who scrub the graffiti off of lockers.

New Vaginal Gel Helps Prevent HIV Infection

AIDS researchers have finally developed a vaginal gel that can help protect women against HIV infection, after years of failed clinical trials. The husband-and-wife team, Quarraisha Abdool Karim, PhD, and Salim S. Abdool Karim, MD, PHD, of the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) and Columbia University, announced their progress at the start of the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna, Austria last week.

The gel, which uses an anti-HIV drug called tenofivir, only offers limited protection: It offers about 39% protection, and according to Quarraisha Abdool Karim, it can offer about 54% protection for women who are highly adherent. The gel is meant to be applied 12 hours before having sex and 12 hours after having sex, and isn’t meant to be used more than once in a 24-hour period (though it should offer protection for women who have sex multiple times within the same 24-hour period).

Though many are saying that the research isn’t conclusive and protection rates aren’t high enough to celebrate a mark of progress just yet, the researchers refute that in countries where the rate of AIDS and HIV is up to 10%, use of the gel could significantly reduce the number of women who become infected each year. It’s also one of the only options for women whose partners refuse to use condoms or permit use of female condoms.
